Insulin Fasting Test

Description

The Insulin Fasting Test measures the level of insulin in the blood after an overnight fast. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels by facilitating the uptake of glucose into cells. This test helps assess how well the body produces and utilizes insulin, which is critical for diagnosing and managing conditions related to blood sugar and metabolism.

• Insulin Levels: Determines if insulin production is adequate, excessive, or deficient.
• Fasting State: Requires no food or drink (except water) for 8-12 hours before the test for accurate results.

Reason for test

Insulin is produced by beta cells of the pancreas. It leads to Type 1 (IDDM) diabetes caused by Insulin deficiency & Type 2 (NIDDM) diabetes caused by insulin resistance. This assay is useful in the management of Diabetes. It is also used for diagnosing Insulinoma when used in conjunction with Proinsu-lin and C-peptide measurement.
